In the throes of the Civil War and the birth of the new frontier, Samuel Colt introduced in 1873 the weapon that would define an era: the Single Action Army, better known as the Peacemaker. This long-barrel version, measuring 34 cm in length, was the preferred choice of U.S. Army cavalry units, which required reliability, power, and range from the saddle.
It did not take long to become the most famous pistol in the West. Its popularity skyrocketed as it shared the same caliber as the legendary Winchester M1873 rifle, simplifying logistics for the gunslinger and the soldier alike. It moved from the military belt to that of the sheriff, the rancher, and the outlaw.
