Enfield 1861 Carabiner – The Steel of the Confederates
A faithful companion of gunners and cavalrymen, the 1861 Enfield Carabiner was the short roar of the British Empire that crossed the fields of the American Civil War.
This 102cm historical reproduction , precision-crafted from high-quality metal and wood , pays homage to one of the most iconic muskets of the 19th century. Equipped with a loading and firing simulation mechanism , it faithfully recreates the experience of handling a muzzle-loading weapon.
The Enfield 1861 , derived from the famed Enfield 1853, was designed as a shorter, more manageable version , ideal for artillery and cavalry units. Its compact size made it the ideal weapon for troops needing to defend themselves without the encumbrance of a long rifle. The British Empire quickly adopted it, and its popularity spread beyond Europe.
In the Flame of the American Civil War
During the American Civil War (1861–1865) , the 1861 Enfield became a vital tool for the Confederate Army. Due to a shortage of their own weapons, the Southern states turned to British contractors and smugglers to import thousands of these weapons. In fact, it was the second most widely used rifle of the conflict , especially by cavalrymen, artillerymen, and mobile units , where its shorter length was a tactical advantage.
The Enfield 1861, or Pattern 1861 , was a 15 mm (.577) caliber muzzle-loading musket with a rifled barrel ( with three grooves ) attached to the fore-end by two metal clamps , earning it the nickname "two-band model." It used Minié bullets , cut from a thick lead wire, which gave the projectile greater resistance.
