Forged at the dawn of modernity, when empires were cracking and trenches were fields of steel and fire, the Mauser C96 pistol emerged as a symbol of innovation and power. More than a weapon, it was the echo of a burning Europe, the companion of soldiers, revolutionaries, and officers who changed the course of history.
The Birth of a Classic
Conceived in 1896 by Peter Paul Mauser, the C96 was one of the first semi-automatic pistols for mass use. Its groundbreaking design, with a broom-shaped grip and forward-mounted magazine, made it a unique piece of its time. It did not take long to receive the nickname “Broomhandle”, and it soon earned a place in the most important war theaters of the 20th century.
The German Army used it extensively during the First World War, where its reliability in close-quarters combat made it an indispensable ally. Beyond Germany, it was adopted by Communist Russia, earning the nickname “Bolo-Mauser” —the Mauser of the Bolsheviks—, and it circulated through multiple conflicts, from revolutions to civil wars, from Asia to Latin America.
In 1939, when the Second World War broke out, the C96 was still active, a testament to its durability, power, and precision. Although it was never adopted as a standard issue weapon by any army, history took it upon itself to turn it into a legend.
