15th Century Burgundian Helmet - 14 Gauge Steel Infantry Helmet with Leather Lining
The Burgundian helmet, also known as the "chapel-de-fer," is one of the most practical and distinctive helmets of 15th-century European infantry. This version, popular between 1450 and 1480, evolved from the earlier 13th- and 14th-century helmet, featuring a scalloped brim and deeper bowl, which offered greater protection against aerial blows, falling arrows, and cavalry blows.
Favored by pikemen, crossbowmen, municipal militiamen, and foot soldiers in the Burgundian Netherlands and throughout the Holy Roman Empire, this helmet was designed to deflect vertical impacts while providing excellent visibility, ventilation, and mobility. Unlike closed helmets or visored designs, the open brim of the kettle hat made it ideal for extended combat or sentry duty.
Our faithful reproduction is forged from durable 14-gauge steel and comes equipped with a fully adjustable leather liner, offering both comfort and historical authenticity. The interior is blackened to resist rust, and the chin strap is fitted with a brass buckle for secure use. The wide brim is beaded down to catch incoming blows, a feature proven in siege and field warfare.
This Burgundian helmet combines authenticity, protection, and visual impact, whether displayed as part of a medieval weapons collection or worn in armored training or demonstrations.
IDEAL FOR:
Historical collections and medieval decoration
Live armor demonstrations or martial training
Display in heritage exhibitions or educational programs
A valuable gift for history buffs or medieval weapons collectors
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
Clean and oil regularly: After use or handling, wipe with a soft cloth and apply a light coat of mineral or machine oil to the steel surface.
Protect leather components: Use a mild soap solution to clean the lining and strap. Condition monthly with natural leather balm to prevent drying or cracking.
Avoid moisture buildup: Always store it in a dry place. A helmet stand or padded holder helps maintain its shape and allow air to circulate.
Handle with care: Despite its durability, strong dents or scratches can expose the metal to rust; preserve the polished finish by handling it carefully.
