In the history of the spear, the leaf-shaped point was a recurring shape. It was used as early as the Bronze Age and was used in a wide variety of designs across many eras and cultures, from ancient times to the Viking Age and well into the Middle Ages.
The so-called winged spear, which was primarily used as a thrusting weapon and is often associated with the Norse, is actually of Franco-Carolingian origin. It was adopted by the Vikings and used both as a war spear and as a hunting spear (the so-called saufeder , a spear specially designed for hunting big game and boar) well into the High Middle Ages. On both the battlefield and when hunting, the wings or projections on either side of the mouthpiece were intended to prevent the point from penetrating too deeply when thrusting, which would have made the spear difficult to extract. They also offered an effective means of parrying in close combat, as well as additional control and better protection against a wounded and enraged animal.
The leaf-shaped spearhead offered here is made of heat-treated EN45 carbon steel. In terms of structure, it closely corresponds to the Carolingian spearheads, which were widespread among warriors and hunters in the Early Middle Ages and is therefore ideally suited to Viking and medieval environments (approx. 8th/9th century to 11th/12th century). It is approximately 43.5 cm long and the blade is reinforced with a distinctive midrib, which provides additional stability and greater penetrating power. The protruding wings are approx. 2. Two holes allow it to be mounted on a wooden handle of your choice to create your own spear. Delivery does not include a shaft or mounting material.

Please note that this spearhead was designed primarily as a collector's item, decorative object, or accessory and is not suitable for exhibition combat! The blade tip is not rounded, and the edges are not sharpened, but ground (with proper equipment and practical experience, they can be sharpened if necessary).

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regularly treating the spearhead, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil ideal for preserving steel products.
