The doublet is a close-fitting jacket or vest for men. The origin of this garment lies in the Franconian doublet, which was used as an undergarment beginning in the 14th century.
Beginning in the 15th century, the doublet appeared as an outer garment in Spanish fashion and became widespread throughout Europe. Typical features of this type of garment were its close-fitting fit, a small high collar, and a seam at the waist. It was usually luxuriously decorated and made from high-quality materials.
The doublet reached the waist or hips and sometimes had an attached lap. The attached lap covered the transition to the trousers, which were attached directly to the doublet with nestle straps. Sometimes the sleeves were also attached only at the shoulders with nestles and could therefore be removed or replaced. Not all doublets had sleeves, which is why the doublet (also called a jerkin in English) was the predecessor of our present-day waistcoat. The center front was usually closed with numerous buttons (a laced center front was more common on its predecessor, the doublet). The stomach or chest area was often raised and padded, as was the fashion of the time.
The doublet was combined with a white shirt and melon-colored trousers. Numerous Spanish portraits from the late Middle Ages provide evidence of the doublet, and some originals from this period are still preserved.
Our lined velvet doublet (100% cotton) doesn't reach the hips. The appliqué ribbons, high-quality ball buttons, and shoulder flaps make it clear this is designed for festive occasions. The attached cuff has a slit and concealed embroidered buttonholes on the front. The buttonholes allow for direct attachment to trousers.
The elegant doublet is ideal for representing wealthy families and enhances any costume.
Regarding velvet, it can be added that it originated in the Mediterranean region in the 14th century and was predominantly woven in Italy. The elaborate design made velvet robes an exclusive item.

Care instructions:
Cotton velvet should not be machine washed, as it will wrinkle irreversibly. Velvet should also not be ironed, as this will cause the pile to lose its depth. We recommend removing light stains with a clothes brush in the direction of the pile. If there is heavy contamination, we recommend dry cleaning the vest.
