This end cap not only served as a counterweight to the spearhead and as protection for the lower end of the shaft, but was also an effective weapon in its own right that could be used as a replacement if either the spearhead or the shaft broke in battle. Thanks to the stable, sharp point at the end, the spear could also be anchored upright in the ground.
