This medieval helmet, which was essentially a simple, close-fitting skullcap made of iron or steel, could be worn alone but was usually combined with a chainmail hood or a mail helmet. Towards the end of the 13th century, it was common practice to wear a hood under the upper helmet on the battlefield or during tournaments. Since the latter was often removed in close combat because it hindered vision and breathing, the brain cap still offered some head protection with the best possible field of vision.

Although the brain hood eventually evolved into the so-called pelvic hood , it never completely disappeared and remained in use throughout the Middle Ages. In the early modern period, the last variant of this type of helmet was worn mainly by nobles and men-at-arms, who concealed it under a fashionable feathered beret or a broad-brimmed leather or felt hat, thus combining style and protection. However, because of the large number of surviving iron hoods from this period, experts tend to assume that they were occasionally issued to ordinary foot soldiers.

This reconstruction of a peakless cerebral cap from the High Middle Ages, as worn in the 13th century, is made of 2 mm steel. The interior of this combat helmet is blackened for improved corrosion protection and features an adjustable, riveted leather inlay. The sturdy, adjustable leather chin strap is fitted with an antiqued brass buckle.

This wearable helmet is suitable for combat, reenactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film. It's best suited to High and Late Medieval settings and is ideal for completing a European warrior's armor. Of course, the medieval helmet is also an excellent addition to any helmet collector's treasure trove.

Details:

- Suitable for wrestling shows

- Material: 2mm steel, leather inlay and chin strap, brass buckle (antique finish)

- Suitable for head circumference up to approx. 61 cm.
- Long interior distance (back of head-front): approx. 21 cm

- Short inner distance (ear-to-ear): approx. 18 cm

- Height: approx. 16 cm

- Weight: approx. 1.6 kg

The above specifications may vary slightly from copy to copy.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion.
