Although some sword fragments were also found at that time, they were not preserved. The beautifully detailed original grave find can be admired at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. This finely crafted piece of Viking history, dating from the 9th and early 10th centuries, is classified as type D according to the Petersen typology of Viking swords.\u003cbr\u003e Since the blade was missing from the original find, a classic Nordic shape was chosen for this reconstruction, and this one-handed sword has the typical features of a traditional sword from the High Middle Ages.   \u003cbr\u003eThe straight, double-edged Damascus* steel blade has a wide kerf and unsharpened edges. The handle, consisting of a short, oval guard (about 10 cm long and 2 cm thick), a brown leather-covered grip, and a generous pommel, is cast in bronze. The guard and pommel are richly decorated. The engraved, highly detailed motifs and patterns that decorated the original artifact have been recreated as faithfully as possible. As with many surviving historical examples from this period, the pommel of this sword is a two-part construction. The full-length blade tang screws into the lower flat section, and the upper cap is secured to the base with two rivets. The beautiful decorations on the pommel are enhanced by twisted copper wire inlays.\u003cbr\u003e This early medieval one-handed sword is delivered with a brown wooden\/leather scabbard with mouthpiece, cap and bronze sling (maximum belt width 6 cm).   \u003cbr\u003eThis sword is designed as a collectible or decorative item. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and longer edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and increased resistance to breaking. With this technology, which developed in a time of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined.
