They developed from the spatha in the 10th century, although the Viking sword can be seen as a transitional form. The crossguard of the medieval one-handed sword is longer than that of early medieval examples, while the blade is somewhat narrower and more pointed.\u003cbr\u003e One-handed swords with straight blades from the High and Late Middle Ages are also colloquially called knightly swords. This is largely due to the fact that medieval knights were often depicted with a one-handed sword and a shield or buckler. Examples of this can be found in the \u003ci\u003eCodex Manesse\u003c\/i\u003e or the \u003ci\u003eSachsenspiegel\u003c\/i\u003e .    \u003cbr\u003eThe medieval one-handed sword was the knight's close combat weapon and, depending on its characteristics, could be used as a slashing or piercing weapon. Until the mid-14th century, one-handed swords were wider and had a sharper blade, as they were used more as slashing weapons against light mail armor. When plate armor came into use, one-handed swords narrowed toward the tip (the sword point) and were used as piercing weapons. One-handed swords were also used on horseback if the polearm broke during battle, was lost, or became unwieldy in the heat of battle.   \u003cbr\u003eThe carbon steel blade of the beautiful sword offered here is forged to the pommel and double-threaded at the handle end. The handle has a stitched leather wrap and is fitted with a classic disc pommel. Our medieval one-handed sword is characterized by the straight guard, which gives the sword its typical cross shape.
