Percy (immortalized by Shakespeare in 1598 in the first part of his historical drama , Henry IV ) had turned against the king and allied himself with Owain Glyndwr, leader of the Welsh Rebellion of 1400–1415. When Percy fell in battle, his army was scattered. The uprising then failed.
The original Shrewsbury sword named after this decisive battle, classified as Type XV by Ewart Oakeshott, is part of the Wallace Collection .
This handsome and inexpensive sword has the typical features of a traditional 14th/15th century hand-and-a-half sword (also called a bastard sword) and is modeled after the swords that were probably wielded on both sides of this great English battle.
The double-edged blade is forged from hardened and heat-treated EN45 spring steel. It has a diamond-shaped cross-section, tapers smoothly toward the tip, and is grooved on both sides. The wide groove runs in the center approximately halfway along the blade's length. The cutting edges are blunt, and the blade's continuous tang is riveted to the end of the handle.
The vessel consists of a handle with a wooden core and brown leather covering, a six-faceted steel pommel, and a flattened crossguard, also made of steel. The ends of the guard are flared and each decorated with a cutout cross. The crossguard measures approximately 23 cm long and 0.5 cm thick.
The late medieval one-and-a-half-handed sword comes with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with a steel muzzle and placemat.
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
Details:
- Material: EN45 spring steel blade (carbon steel, not stainless), steel guard and pommel, wooden handle with leather covering
- Total length: approx. 116cm
- Blade length: approx. 89 cm
- Handle length: approx. 24 cm (handle section approx. 19 cm)
- Maximum blade width: approx. 5.5 cm.
- Center of gravity: approx. 16 cm in front of the guard
- Incl. wooden case with genuine leather lining and steel fittings
- Weight without cover: approx. 1.6kg
- Weight with case: approx. 2.1 kg
The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.
The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion.
