Its particularly long blade provided the reach and leverage needed for powerful stabbing and slashing, while its long crossguard and heavy pommel could be used as striking weapons and also to hook and unbalance the opponent or control their weapon. When heavy plate armor needed to be pierced, sword strikes were almost ineffective and were often omitted in favor of the so-called \u003ci\u003ehalf-sword technique\u003c\/i\u003e : in this type of combat, the swordsman held the sword handle with one hand and gripped the blade with the other in order to guide the sword point more accurately and more precisely pierce the gaps and joints in the knight's armor.   \u003cbr\u003eThis Cold Steel® reconstruction was designed based on the Italian sword design. Although the blade and center of gravity are designed more for thrusting attacks, the cutting edges are also surprisingly effective.
