It was found in Lake Constance, in the border triangle between Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, and can be seen in the collection of the Royal Armory (object number IX.1106). Knightly swords like this one were used throughout Europe in the second half of the 14th century. They were used, for example, at the Battle of Sempach in 1386.
This bastard sword has a rigid, tapered, double-edged blade with a pointed tip and a hilt that can be wielded with one or two hands. The blade has a simple, flattened, diamond-shaped cross-section. The impressively large disc pommel, on the other hand, has a complex and sophisticated shape.
This type of sword was likely used by armored men and knights, usually one-handed on horseback or two-handed on foot. This sword appears to have been designed entirely for armored combat and half-sword (gripping the blade with one hand) due to the blade's notable flexural rigidity and mass. In terms of cutting geometry, the blade was less intended for slashing, but had a strong presence on the strike. The heavy pommel could also be used efficiently for close-quarters strikes.

The blade of this replica was handcrafted by a skilled blacksmith. It is made of 1080 carbon steel, hardened, and tapered distally for optimal weight distribution.
The scabbard with a wooden core is covered in leather. The tip is reinforced with a brass plate decorated with a recess typical of the period. At the muzzle, leather covers part of the crossguard at the ricasso.
A certificate of authenticity and a cleaning cloth are included.
Details:
- Material: 1080 carbon steel
- Total length: approx. 111.8cm
- Blade length: approx. 86.36 cm
- Weight: approx. 1.81 kg
- Includes leather case
- Manufacturer's item number: 501832
At Tienda Medieval, we have thousands of medieval and other period products.
