The fuller ones generally extended from the guard to half or two-thirds of the blade. Although there are exceptions, the hilt was usually fitted with a guard that curved slightly toward the blade and a disc pommel (with or without beveled edges).
Type 16 swords were especially popular in the first half of the 14th century. Their appearance and diffusion coincided with the arrival of plate armor, necessitating a rethinking of sword design. Since chain mail had not yet completely gone out of fashion, the aim was to offer versatile swords that effectively combined slashing and piercing capabilities and could therefore withstand mixed types of armor. With their pointed location and robust diamond cross-section, they were ideal for piercing gaps and armor joints or piercing plate armor, but were also capable of powerful slashing and cutting.
Our reconstruction features a double-edged carbon steel blade with grooves on both sides approximately two-thirds of its length. The edges are not sharp, but their placement is very pointed, and the blade's continuous tang is riveted to the pommel.
The handle consists of a steel crossguard approximately 20.5 cm long slightly curved towards the blade, a wooden handle section tightly wrapped in leather, and a bevelled octagonal steel disc pommel (Oakeshott type i1, a popular variant in the 14th and 15th centuries).
The beautiful wooden core sword scabbard is covered in brown leather and finally fitted with a carrying strap, approximately 4 cm wide and made of approximately 2 mm thick leather, which wraps around the scabbard. The pre-cut strap has a sufficient number of holes for adjustment and a snug, comfortable fit.
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It's also ideal as an accessory, for example, to complete your costume.
Details:
- Blade material: 1065 carbon steel (not stainless)
- Handle material: wood with brown leather covering, pommel, guard and rivet block made of steel.
- Total length: approx. 99cm
- Blade length: approx. 81.5 cm
- Blade thickness: approx. 5 mm (approx. 2.5 mm at the tip + cutting edges approx. 1 mm)
- Handle length: approx. 17.5 cm (handle section approx. 10 cm)
- Maximum blade width: approx.
- Center of gravity: approx. 13 cm in front of the guard
- Includes wooden case with genuine leather sheath and strap with steel buckle.
- Weight without cover: approx. 1.18kg
- Weight with case: approx. 1.77 kg
The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.
The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion.
