It was considered the finest cavalry sword ever designed and was still in use during the First World War.
The 1912 model was clearly based on the 1908 model, but was much more elaborately decorated. When introduced, it was issued to all officers to replace the inconsistent swords they had previously purchased privately. Compared to the standard sword, the handle was more sophisticatedly designed: while the standard 1908 version for common soldiers was fitted with a rubber or Bakelite grip, in the officer version these materials were replaced with sharkskin inlaid with nickel silver wire. In addition, the cupped guard was decorated with floral engraving (honeysuckle motif) in the style of 19th-century officer swords.
The 1912 model is still used today as the ceremonial sword of British, Australian and Canadian cavalry units.
The beautiful and economical reconstruction we offer here features a straight, single-edged EN45 spring steel blade with grooves running approximately two-thirds of its length. The unsharpened edge is approximately 1 mm thick. The bowl has a fore-end, and the generously sized bowl-shaped guard plate reproduces the motifs that adorned historical models as faithfully as possible. The wooden core handle is wrapped in black leather and twisted steel wire.
The cavalry sword is delivered with a matching steel scabbard with two ring straps, movable support rings and a wide, rounded end piece or shoe .
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
Details:
- Material: EN45 spring steel blade (carbon steel, not stainless), steel guard and pommel, wooden handle with leather sheath and steel wire wrapping
- Total length: approx. 109cm
- Blade length: approx. 89 cm
- Container: approx. 20 cm
- Maximum blade width: approx. 3 cm (tapers to approx. 2 cm towards the tip)
- Blade thickness: approx. 4 mm (tapers to approx. 1 mm towards the tip)
- Cutting edge: approx. 1 mm
- Center of gravity: approx. 17 cm in front of the guard
- Includes metal case with carrying rings.
- Weight without cover: approx. 0.98kg
- Weight with case: approx. 1.7 kg
The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.
The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion.
