It was usually wielded in the left hand (hence the name lefthand dagger , lefthand or main gauche – left hand in french) and together with a main weapon (sword, rapier or rapier) it was used for a two-handed fighting style. With its distinctive guard, which offered protection to the main hand and came in many different variations (straight, s-shaped, downward-curved, sometimes with an additional ring or guard), this secondary weapon was primarily used for defense and was designed to attack enemy swords in close combat in order to parry, deflect, block or trap. But it was also effective in attack and quite capable of stabbing an opponent. The intricately crafted and richly decorated daggers also served as an elegant display of the wearer's wealth, and were often carried demonstratively by knights and wealthy citizens as a status symbol.

The inexpensive combat dagger offered here has the typical features of a traditional Renaissance parry dagger. The unsharpened full-tang blade, made of EN45 spring steel, is hardened and tempered to approx. 48 HRC and is screwed (invisibly) to the pommel. A wide groove runs along the centre for about half its length. The handle consists of a four-sided handle with a wooden core and black leather covering, which is framed by a stop pommel and a sturdy, approx. 12 cm wide steel handguard. The guard, which is curved towards the blade, ends with tapered, conical ends.

This beautiful stabbing weapon is delivered with a sturdy (approx. 3 mm thick) carefully sewn sheath made of brown vegetable-tanned leather with a belt loop.

With its approximately 1.5mm / 2mm thick blunt edges and rounded tip, this left-handed dagger is ideal for reenactments, light show combat or sparring.
