The Kage no Senshi Tsurugi Ken is a double-edged, straight-bladed sword that is perfect for stabbing and slashing and can be wielded in one or both hands. It was created as a continuation of the tradition of modern shinobi. The fourth member of the Kage no Senshi family commands respect with his impressive unokubi zukuri sword . The blade was deliberately given more weight to ensure maximum balance and striking power. To achieve maximum grip, the sword was fitted with a slightly sturdier handle compared to its three predecessors, the Kage no Senshi Chokuto , the Kage no Senshi Tsurugi Tanto , and the Kage no Senshi Tsurugi Wakizashi.
The tsurugi is one of the earliest swords that paved the way for Japanese weaponry. Some of the tsurugi discovered on Japanese soil date back to 700 BC. They are mostly of Chinese origin, as straight-bladed swords were not as common in feudal Japan. Compared to the original tsurugi, Battle-Blades has taken the artistic liberty of creating something never seen before while keeping the main components faithful to the original.
Similar to the Kage no Senshi Tsurugi Wakizashi, this sword has a unique diamond-shaped iron tsuba. We wanted to retain the essence of the familiar square tsuba of shinobi swords, but with an added twist. The geometry of the nagasa has been carefully designed to make it powerful enough to withstand heavy cuts and stabs, while maintaining the exceptionally fast handling of the sword as it tapers sharply towards the tip. For this reason, the sword is super fast and easy to handle. The true notary-style hamon gives the sword a calm aura. This double-edged weapon is fully hand-forged and polished from T10 steel and wrapped with midnight blue stingray leather and tsuka-ito wrapping to match the Kage no Senshi Shinobi attire. Guarding the blade is a jet-black saya, fully custom-made with a unique Koiguchi shape for a smooth lining.
As always, this weapon is Battleblades quality guaranteed and comes with an embroidered Battleblades silk sword bag and a certificate with the serial number.
Details:
- Blade material/nagasa material: T10 steel
- Total length: approx. 79cm
- Blade/nagasa length: approx. 54.5 cm
- Handle/tsuka length: approx. 24.5cm
- Blade thickness at the back/kasane: approx. 7.2 mm
- Blade thickness at the front/sakikasane: approx. 4 mm
- Blade/motohaba width: approx. 3.6 cm
- Blade width at tip/sakihaba: approx. 2.2 cm
- Weight with cover/saya: approx. 1.14kg
- Weight: approx. 868 g
The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.
At Tienda Medieval, we have thousands of medieval and other period products. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and longer edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and increased resistance to breaking. With this technology, which developed in a time of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colors with different carbon contents, stunning patterns of alternating layers are created, such as the so-called twist damask or rose damask . The advantage of untreated magnolia wood was its low acid content and the absence of other ingredients that could damage the blade. It wasn't treated afterward, but instead absorbed the resulting moisture from the sword and directed it outwards. The katana remained dry and did not rust. Shirasaya were often provided with an inscription ('sayagaki') containing information about the blade, such as its origin, place and time of forging, and the name of the smith and expert. Since the emperor banned the carrying of blades in the late 19th century, all decoration around the handle and tsuba was reduced, and the shirasaya costume we know today was created. The wearer was not particularly noticeable due to the katana's similarity to a sword or a wooden staff and had a specific way of carrying it.

Details:

- Blade material: carbon steel

- Handle length: approx. 28cm

- Blade length: approx. 72.5 cm

- Total length: (without cover) approx. 100.5cm

- Weight: (without case) approx. 940g

This article is also available in a lightweight version (item no. 0106857430)

At Tienda Medieval, we have thousands of medieval and other period products. The sword's name translates as shadow warrior, which, along with the dark blue color of the sageo and ito, indicates the shadows in which shinobi supposedly operate. The youngest member of the Chokuto family is characterized by an unusual o-kissaki blade tip, rarely seen in shinobi gatana. This not only gives the blade a distinctive look but also makes it easier to stab with. The katate maki-wrapped tsuka is decorated with custom golden dragon menuki and a kabuto gane-style kashira. Overall, the sword is more compact than the Chokuto shinobi, as it has a slightly shorter blade and smaller tsuba. The Rikko-style tsuka, on the other hand, is 10 mm longer than the Shinobi Chokutō for increased torque and maximum cutting power. The hand-forged, polished, and ground Hazuya T10 blade features our signature clay-hardened, lustrous hamon. Shinobi stealth may date back even further, but it wasn’t until the Sengoku period that ninja were trained specifically for their intended purpose: to take advantage of constant warfare.

The Yamabushi also lived in the mountainous regions of Iga and Koga and practiced religion and inner peace. The new caste system was founded in part by them because they wanted nothing to do with the brutal outside warfare. The formation of their own caste system allowed the two ninja strongholds of Iga and Koga to exchange information and develop their own techniques of medicine, espionage, warfare, and assassination. Both Iga and Koga were governed by a city council rather than a daimyo (ruler), making them politically and socially independent, democratic, and autonomous ninja provinces. However, this era would soon come to an end when the last Koga ninja were deployed in the Shimabara Revolt of 1637, and the mountainous regions came under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate and its 300 daimyos. The Shimabara Rebellion was the largest civil war in Japan during the relatively peaceful Edo period (1603–1867). With the end of the Edo period, Emperor Meiji and the Boshin War restored imperial rule in Japan.

Ninja weapons

During the Sengoku and Edo periods, the two ninja strongholds of Iga and Kōga developed their own weapons in addition to martial arts. The preferred weapons of the ninja were the katana and straight-bladed swords like the ninjato. Ninja used many techniques with these swords, including using them as weapons and as distractions. Ninja swords were coated with a combination of red pepper and earth at the tip of the scabbard. When the sword was drawn, the mixture was thrown into the eyes of enemies to distract them from the fatal blow.

Much is left to the imagination, as much of the known information about the national myth surrounding the ninja comes from folk tales and modern pop culture. This mystery surrounding shinobi has led to the belief that some of them even possessed supernatural powers, such as flight, invisibility, shapeshifting, the ability to split into multiple bodies, summon animals, and control the five classical elements.

The modern ninja of pop culture was primarily inspired by the actor, writer, and martial artist Sho Kosugi, who made the straight-blade ninja sword famous through his films and television shows in the 1980s. Whether a straight-blade ninja sword with a square tsuba actually existed in feudal Japan is still debated, though it is depicted in many paintings. Myth or not, the Kage no Senshi Chokuto is a tribute to the great Sho Kosugi and the ninja too he brought back into popularity.

Details:

- Blade material/nagasa material: T10 steel

- Total length: approx. 84.6cm

- Blade/nagasa length: approx. 56.2 cm

- Handle/tsuka length: approx. 27.7cm

- Blade thickness at the back/casane: approx. 7.1 mm

- Blade thickness at the front/sakikasane: approx. 3 mm

- Blade/motohaba width: approx. 3.2 cm

- Blade width at tip/sakihaba: approx. 2.4 cm

- Weight with cover/saya: approx. 1.2kg

- Weight: approx. 1.04 kg

The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.

At Tienda Medieval, we have thousands of medieval and other period products. These double-edged swords are commonly known as tsurugi , which literally translates to blade/sword . This word is most commonly used in japanese for straight, double-edged swords, but also for other foreign swords with the same characteristics.

The tsurugi is one of the first swords that paved the way for Japanese weaponry. Some of the tsurugis discovered on Japanese soil date back to 700 BC. They are mostly of Chinese origin, as straight-bladed swords were not widely used in feudal Japan. Compared to the original tsurugi, with these battle-bladed versions, artistic liberty was taken to create something never seen before while keeping the main components true to the original. For example, the long tsuka often seen on tantos and wakizashis today is too long and holds no historical significance. They wanted to give these swords a short tsuka, like short swords in Japan. This compact tsuka style is also beneficial when the weapon is used with the correct techniques. Since a short, smaller tsuka makes balancing the sword a challenge, Battle-Blades decided to make the nagako (especially on the longer wakizashi version) much wider and thicker than usual in order to balance the weapons optimally.

The Kage no Senshi Tsurugi Wakizashi features a unique diamond-shaped iron tsuba, as Battle-Blades wanted to retain the essence of the well-known square tsuba of shinobi swords, but with an added twist. The true notary-style hamon gives the sword a harmonious look. This double-edged T10 steel wakizashi is forged and polished entirely by hand. This shinken sword is a weapon of high-ranking samurai and is therefore particularly impressive in terms of decoration. It is made of 1095 steel and handles like a katana. In the following text, you can read more about the history of the Sengoku period and the Bushō Shinken sword.

Samurai weapons of Sengoku Busho

The Sengoku period was one of the most warlike eras of feudal Japan and lasted 136 years. During this period in Japanese history, there were samurai and high-ranking officials called Sengoku bushō who also acted as bodyguards to the rulers, as they needed to be constantly protected from assassins from enemy states. The weapons carried by Sengoku bushō were often much more elaborate and expensive to reflect their higher rank. For this reason, Battleblades decided to decorate this sword with antique brass details; magnificently decorated fittings on the saya and kashira, as well as flower-patterned fuchi and koiguchi.

The special features of the Sengoku Busho Shinken sword

The Sengoku Bushō Shinken sword was originally inspired by tachi swords from earlier periods in Japanese history. Battleblades wanted to retain the deep, effective koshi sori-like curve of the typical tachi blade, along with a few other details, such as the scabbard fittings and the tachi-style koshirae. This hand-forged 1095 steel hybrid is designed to be used as a katana and to be drawn and wielded using the style and techniques developed for katanas during the Sengoku period.

This sword has the deepest sori of any Battleblades sword to date, ensuring maximum cutting power and efficiency with less effort. The wide, full-length bo-hi continues the yokote line that separates the rest of the nagasa from its attractive trademark: the o-kissaki point. The wide bo-hi lightens the blade, hardens it, and ensures effortless handling. Flaming, vibrant, and extremely visible, the sanbon suki-style hamon is unlike any other sword from the company. In contrast to the imposing nagasa and the magnificent flaming hamon line, a simplified brass habaki has been added.

Handmade and decorated shinken sword

Although the tsuka shares many of the distinctive features of the Muromachi-era tachi sword, such as the antique-finished kabuto gane-style tsuba and kashira, the shape of the tsuka itself is slightly more katana-like. The delicate rikko (hourglass) shape and tsumami maki string ensure a firm, secure grip when wielding the weapon. The length of the tsuka, on the other hand, is similar to that of a tachi; it is designed for a wider, two-handed grip. If you hold the sword with both hands, the specially designed antique-finished brass menuki fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and ensures a firm grip. The dark brown ito is secured with a floral-patterned fuchi and kashira made of antiqued brass, which beautifully frames the black ray skin peeking out from under the ito. Regardless of the decorative elements of this sword, Battleblades can ensure that the balance of this Shinken sword is exactly right and prepared for heavy Tameshigiri.

The scabbard of the Sengoku Bushō Shinken is truly a masterpiece; maximally curved, completely unique, and unlike anything that has come before. The sword's stunning brass fittings are the icing on the cake. Thanks to the perfectly fitted seppa and koiguchi plates, the sword slides in and out of its saya, so there is absolutely no gap between the pieces. The high-quality, dark brown silk sageo is attached to the saya with a buffalo horn kurigata. The black buffalo horn kurigata contrasts beautifully with the light brown lacquered wooden saya. The natural knots in the wood give the sword a distinctive, luxurious look. The antique brass semegane and the sayajiri at the end of the saya, characteristic of Tachi, complete the design.

As always, this Shinken sword is Battleblades quality guaranteed and comes with an embroidered Battleblades silk sword bag and a certificate with the serial number.

Details:

- Blade material/nagasa material: 1095 steel

- Total length: approx. 100.6cm

- Blade/nagasa length: approx. 72.2 cm

- Handle/tsuka length: approx. 27.5cm

- Blade thickness at the back/casane: approx. 7 mm

- Blade thickness at the front/sakikasane: approx. 3 mm

- Blade/motohaba width: approx. 3.1 cm

- Blade width at tip/sakihaba: approx. 2.3 cm

- Weight with cover/saya: approx. 1.4kg

- Weight: approx. 1.09 kg

The above specifications may vary slightly from specimen to specimen.

At Tienda Medieval, we have thousands of medieval and other period products.
